Letter from the Board: Looking Forward to August

Hello, friends! We are so excited about camp in August-—it is going to be awesome! Here are a few updates.

We’re hosting camp August 23-26 (Friday-Monday) at Aldersgate Camps and Retreat Center in Turner, Oregon. Aldersgate encompasses 40 scenic acres in a beautiful forest setting. You may remember that we held PAWMA camp at this location in 2013 and 2014. Turner is near Salem, Oregon, about an hour away from Portland.

We will announce teachers and have registration ready soon. We received many terrific applications from talented martial artists and wish we could pick everyone (extending camp to last a couple of weeks would be fine, right?). We are aiming for an exciting slate of teachers that has diversity in teaching experience, soft and hard styles, race, geography, and type of class.

Aldersgate has several lodging options. There are cute, winterized A-frame cabins (we anticipate putting around six people in each cabin), a couple of lodges (two people per room, each room with its own bathroom, will be the upgrade option), and RV and camping options. There are also plenty of vacation rentals nearby, if you prefer to not stay at camp.

Members get discounted registration (and provide year-long support for the organization)! If you're not a member or your membership has lapsed, join/renew today.

If you’re not sure you can afford camp, please apply for a scholarship. (Details will be available on the website soon.)

If you can afford camp (and a bit more), please consider donating to our scholarship and operating funds so that we can make camp accessible for more people and keep PAWMA a strong and healthy nonprofit organization. We rely on generous supporters like you.

Our new board members, who joined us in November, have been a pleasure to work with: Emmy Highsmith, Jaydra Perfetti, Kat Long, and Veronica Peshterianu. They join our outgoing board members who will be finishing their service this year: Aminta Steinbach, Ellen Morrison, Gin Yang, Leslie Lippard, Lynn Kessler, and me (Tyler LePard). We will need more board members to step up at the membership meeting to plan next year’s camp, so start thinking about volunteering for the board! (If you won’t be at camp, email us to volunteer.)

Thanks! Have feedback or questions? Want to know more about what being a board member entails? Reach out to us at camp@pawma.org.

Hope to see you in August,

Tyler & the PAWMA Board
