Finding a Way Forward

PAWMA’s 43rd annual training camp is happening in a few weeks! We are excited to bring this year’s online camp to you all. The Board has planned a schedule featuring impressive instructors from a range of styles including Kung Fu, Cuong Nhu, Qigong, Indonesian kuntao, Pentjak Silat Ratu Adil, healing arts, and more!

Earlier this year we were unsure if that would be the case first with the threat of the spread of COVID-19, add to that riots across the country, and now wildfires across California. When 2020 began no one could have anticipated the world would be where it is now. In April the Board canceled the in-person camp due to the pandemic, still hopeful of coming together as a community online, but unsure of how that would take shape.

Since that time the world has become well acquainted with video conferencing technologies such as Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, and Facebook video chats, etc. for better or worse. A lot of Martial Arts schools began holding classes online as we all continued to take steps forward despite all that was going on in the world.

With that in mind the Board is proud and excited to bring you this year's camp via Zoom. The two and a half day event will have a full schedule of classes beginning Friday September 11th through Sunday September 13th led by a host of knowledgeable instructors.

Also, due to the precarious financial situation a lot of our members may be in, one of the changes the Board made this year was to have the sliding scale fee begin at $0 to make it easier for everyone who wished to participate this year.

We are pleased to have the following instructors this year:

PAWMA Camp 2020 will also be hosting a panel on Saturday: Activating Our Communities: Martial Arts & Anti-racist Practice. This will be a facilitated discussion about the intersections of martial arts and systems of oppression.

Martial Arts training holds a special place in all of our lives and completely canceling the camp this year was not an option. With that in mind we are hoping to use the online camp to Connect our community online, Activate new ways of training, and Engage us to show up in the world around us.

We are always grateful for the instructors who teach at our annual camps as well as the people who participate. This year, with everyone adjusting to the new "normal" we find ourselves doubly appreciative for both, and we hope you will join us for this special PAWMA 2020 camp online.

Everyone on the PAWMA Board hopes you all are staying safe and healthy during these trying times.

Stay strong
